- Samsung Electro-Mechanics (SEMCO), a Samsung affiliate that makes multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs), chip package substrates and camera modules, posted record Q3 revenue of ₩3.76 trillion (≈ $2.82B) and operating profit of ₩691.0 billion, about 7% above consensus.
- AI data centers drove both main businesses: MLCC sales rose 36% and substrate (FC-BGA) sales rose 58% year over year. MLCC average selling prices rose by double digits from Q2.
- Management expects growth to continue in Q4 and every quarter of 2027. Long-term supply agreements with about 50 customers should cover more than half of next year’s MLCC sales.
- The stock, up roughly sevenfold earlier this year, is now about half its 52-week high and fell sharply on Oct 30 as worries about U.S. Big Tech AI spending hit Korean chip stocks.
What does Samsung Electro-Mechanics make?
Think of it as a supplier of the “plumbing” inside AI servers and phones. MLCCs are tiny components that store and steady electricity — an AI server needs thousands of them. FC-BGA substrates are the boards that connect a high-end chip (like a server CPU or AI accelerator) to the rest of the system. It is Korea’s leading maker of both and competes with Japan’s Murata and Ibiden. It is listed only in Seoul (no U.S. ADR).

What management said on the call
- MLCC demand expected to rise across all uses, with supply getting tighter.
- FC-BGA substrate shortages expected to continue; prices being negotiated to reflect higher raw material costs.
- Server CPU substrate shipments planned to double in Q4.
- Management expects large growth every quarter of 2027, starting in Q1.
- Demand for a high-capacity AI server MLCC (1005 size, 47μF) is expected to grow about eightfold in 2027.
- Silicon capacitors: mass production from 2027 under a ₩1.5 trillion supply deal with a global Big Tech customer (disclosed in May).
- ₩4.27 trillion (≈ $3.2B) for FC-BGA substrates in Sejong, Korea (Sept 2026–May 2028), plus expansion in Vietnam.
- A new plant in the Philippines to start making advanced MLCCs in 2027.
- 2026 capital spending will be higher than first planned (no figure given).
Why the stock is weak despite record profit
- A huge run first: the stock rose from about ₩270,000 at the start of 2026 to ₩1.97 million by June 9 (Herald Economy) and later a 52-week high of ₩2.417 million. It closed at ₩1.306 million on Oct 28, about 46% below the high (Seoul Economic Daily).
- AI spending worries: on Oct 30, after Alphabet and Amazon raised spending and showed weaker cash flow, the KOSPI fell more than 5% intraday and a sell-side “sidecar” curb was triggered. SEMCO traded as low as ₩1,161,000 (−10.21%) that morning (Digital Daily).
- Still richly valued: about 92x trailing earnings and 8.8x book value at Oct 30 intraday prices. Hana Securities estimates about 21x 2027 earnings — so the price assumes big profit growth ahead.
Two sides of the story
| Bull case | Bear case |
| MLCC and substrate shortages lifting prices | New capacity in 2027–28 could ease shortages |
| Long-term deals cover over half of 2027 MLCC sales | Depends heavily on Big Tech AI spending |
| New products: silicon capacitors, humanoid robot cameras | High valuation leaves little room for disappointment |
| Broker targets ₩1.9M–₩3.0M (avg ≈ ₩2.35M) | Stock fell ~50% from its peak in a few months |
What to watch next
- Q4 operating profit: brokers expect roughly ₩816–842 billion (Hana, IBK).
- 2027 MLCC contract prices: whether they are set above 2026 levels.
- Substrate supply: whether prices hold as new lines start in 2027.
- U.S. Big Tech capex plans for 2027: the main swing factor for the stock.
Samsung Electro-Mechanics is one of the clearest “picks and shovels” plays on AI hardware in Korea, and Q3 confirmed it: record profit, rising MLCC prices and sold-out substrates. The share price, however, already ran far ahead and now moves with global sentiment on AI spending more than with its own results. Q4 profit, 2027 contract prices and Big Tech capex plans are the next signposts.
